Be Resourceful

2 min 327 words

As an employee not only startups but big companies as well, resourcefulness is such an important traits that everyone should have.

This thing is not really being taught at the university. Often people think that if they get a job and to work on certain role, they must be scoping their work to only certain extent. I totally agree with that, but that is only true if you are just starting out and learning.

As you progress in your career, being resourceful is a very important traits that you need to have. What is that actually? Being resourceful is not only work within your scope, for me it is extra contribution to the company based on what you know.

Back then I often feel like my skill is not worthy and become afraid to contribute or suggest something better to the team. Turns out, when you start to share your knowledge, it will spark a very good discussion amongst the team and then continue with the bigger team and the end goal, everyone will get the benefit from it especially yourselves.

I experience this during my time at SEEK. I often initiate sharing session with the team. Back then we use to do micro repo but suddenly we starting to feel that it is hard to maintain and then it sparks discussion amongst the team and trigger everyone to start sharing what they know. This is what we call being resourceful. I did my part doing presentation on this one mono repo tool called Nx, what a good time.

Being resourceful is a trait that very close to the individual themselves, because you don’t wait for your boss to say “Hey can you please present about this” instead you are the one who initiate.

Sharing something doesn’t need to be alot like 30 slide decks, 3 months of presentation planning. It can just be the thing that you learn throughout the weekend, people will appreciate, trust me.
